If I was to ask you what your favourite TV show was and where it is from, would you say America? Well, odds are that you would say America. However, it is highly likely that the TV show/sitcom/reality TV show has originated or influenced from a different country.
Example: Big Brother originated in the Netherlands, and has since expanded to FORTY different countries! As someone who has only ever watched one episode of Big Brother, I am thinking “What the heck! How did this show get so big?” And how did John De Mol sell Big Brother for $5.3 Billion?

In my case, one of my favourite TV shows at the moment is Riverdale — basic, I know. Now, of course Riverdale is an American show. But, Riverdale isn’t a great example because the majority of its influences are from other American TV shows and comics. Riverdale has been heavily influenced by David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, and particularly by the Archie Comics. Though Riverdale is currently being filmed in Canada, the difference in Cultures between America and Canada are slim to none.
However, if I was to use Kath and Kim as an example, the Cultural difference in humour between any country and Australia is so large, that when it was first released other countries did not get the point of the show. And thought it was quite controversial… Whoops!
A television program or movie can have different interpretations according to the culture. If a director, writer or producer wishes to appeal to multiple countries, the show must be able to transcend cultural similarities and differences. Appealing to multiple cultures… If that makes sense??
