Audiences: Fangirl Lil

So the other day a memory popped up on my Facebook feed. (Because that’s how I want to start my day… Cringing.)

This photo wasn’t even taken 2 years ago like my phone told me, so I must have been editing it. *inserts shrugging GIF*

I look at this photo and think; “I edited this photo so dramatically, over the already existing Snapchat filter. What is wrong with me?!”

Anyway, I decided to look back at some old photos and found my old fangirl photos.

I then realised that I had an Instagram account still existing, and I have no idea what the password is to delete it. Soooo, why not expose myself on here as a project?

So, there are a number of things going on in this post.

  1. The terrible quality of the photo.
  2. The lack of sentence structure and punctuation that is happening.
  3. Only 4 likes.
  4. Lastly, the absolute cringe it is.

There it is. The side you didn’t know I had.

I was an obsessed audience member to The Vampire Diaries. Was I alone in this? You know what? I probably was!

What did you guys fan over?

The reason I am talking about this, is the feeling of being an audience member as committed as this, is different to any other.

Have you ever felt that rush of adrenaline when a new episode is released? Or the empathy for when your favourite character gets his heart broken? That’s basically what I will be talking about in this blog.

I spent whatever free time I had watching The Vampire Diaries. Obsessing over everything that was happening, and obviously, making an instagram page that only got twenty followers — sad I know. I probably rewatched the TV show fifteen times.

Unfortunately, zero of my friends, were there to support me in my fan-girling needs. Most of my friends made fun of me — I don’t blame them at all; I was a nerd.

We talked about being an audience member in my Introduction to Communication and Media lecture. Audiences aren’t just one that you can physically see when performing or the ones you know are watching on TV. They are also the ones who receive the spam from fan accounts.

My audience was only 20 people, and I’m sure they all hard cringing.

Until next time,

Lil x

  1. Interesting perspective!
A lot of students are posting about their audience experience from a consumer standpoint, whereas you’re talking about being the producing and curator of an audience.
Feedback and discussion can produce a huge amount learning, so producing an audience is the perfect incubator for relevant discussions as you get to choose what the content and subject is, as well as the audience you attract.
    Interesting perspective indeed!

  2. First of all, ooft. But don’t feel too bad. Teenagers are lame. Every last one of them. We were all dweebs once. Secondly, it’s intriguing looking at audiences from the perspective of the creator, which is something we should probably do more often, especially given the already obvious popularity with content creation with Twitter, Instagram, Youtube and the like.
Finally, own that cringe. It’s a part of all of us. I promise this last joke isn’t to pad the word count. Frankly, I’d be deeply upset if someone suggested that. Deeply. Upset.
Really good work, though. And that’s one hundred.
