Who are the “big guys” of the media?

Have you ever thought about who owns all that information that is being forced upon you? Is the information you are receiving influenced by the owner opinion? And should I start thinking about this?

Have you ever heard the names,;

You’ve probably heard their names on the news, or in some media scandals and never really paid attention to who they are. Some of you might remember some of their names and know who they are. But, I’d be very surprised if you did know who they all are.

These five men and women own the majority of the media, and they are actually have quite a hold over what you consume on a day-to-day basis.

This means, that you should probably be aware of who they are. However, I’m not going to blame you if you have no idea who they are and what they stand for.

Have you guys heard of the Cambridge Analytica Scandal?

Without going too much into it, Facebook released 87 million profiles to Cambridge Analytica to help with Trump’s election campaign.

Where information seems unclear, is whether or not CEO Mark Zuckerburg knew what was going on. He wrote; “I’ve been working to understand exactly what happened and how to make sure this doesn’t happen again. The good news is that the most important actions to prevent this from happening again today we have already taken years ago. But we also made mistakes, there’s more to do, and we need to step up and do it.”

The reason I have told you this story, is that sometimes we blame the owners for such things that happen in the media. When sometimes, they have no idea what is going on. This makes it really difficult to differentiate who and what is trust-worthy. Knowing can be trusted can allow us to decide where we should get our news sources from.

It is staggering that 5 people own 90% of the media, isn’t it!? Thinking that everything we use on a daily basis is owned by such a small percentage of people.

I think it can be beneficial for us, as users and audience members, to be aware of who owns the media, and what is actually going on.

You are loved and so very powerful!

Until next time,

Lil x

  1. This post definitely makes me want to think deeper into who’s controlling our media, even though my blog post was basically about not caring at all haha. Love that you incorporated the Mark Zuckerburg scandal for reference, it’s crazy how much data one person can own. You did a great job at explaining how important it’s becoming for us to pay attention to what we’re seeing and reading too. I agree we have to question everything nowadays. I definitely didn’t recognise all those names straight away (even though I probably should have from class). Overall this was a superb post! Super informative and really makes you wonder what they’re all up to.

  2. Interesting Blog! It is scary to think about how those 5 people own pretty much all the media channels and companies which gives them a lot of power over us. Being a BCM student we have obviously discussed this a lot in class and know that it is not always best to follow the opinions of people who try to control us via the media. For example since Rupert Murdoch is the senior executive of The Herald then they are more likely to publish information standing by his beliefs and political views. Just something to think about, keep up the good work!!!
