Does any remember a time before copyright???
Me neither… It seems like copyright laws have been around forever, right?
Before copyright, everyone was free to;
- Modify, copy or sell already made content,
- Nobody had claims over their work,
- Instead of collective commons, we had public commons.
This sounds like a different time, doesn’t it? Today we now have; patents, trademarks, copyright, and way too many owners and distributers.
Now we have to think about;
- Fair use,
- Fair dealing,
- and endless copyright acts.
Next time you are writing an essay, listening to music or creating a youtube video, think about who owns some of the content you’re embedding. Think about the fact that anything you create, you have creative ownership over – that is until 70 years after you pass away.
This week for my remediation I made a meme.

On that morbid note, see you next time.

I wish it could go back to the good old days where people were able to share content that they were interested in and repost it without getting slammed with a whole bunch of copyright laws. Yes, I get the point that it helps artists keep hold of their content and receive what they have rightfully earned. However, I think it’s stupid that you can’t play a song in a YouTube video without getting a copyright strike. If anything, this would be benefiting the original owner of the music by giving more exposure to the track!

It was so much better just being able to download youtube music onto your mp3 without fear of copyright. I really think you nailed the nostalgia and emotional aspect of copyright but maybe you could add a source from an academic about the subject.
