What does Clay Shirky mean when he says; “The internet imposes no barriers to entry, no economies of scale, no limits on supply.”?
Could he possibly mean that everyone can do anything on the internet?
The thing about the internet is that it is so vast. Whether it be; studying for an exam, or your career, everyone has some connection to the internet. So it should come as no surprise that legacy media is being wiped out.
Being connected and aware has never been so easy because of the internet. Now anyone can become an “internet sensation!”
Well this is actually what Clay Shirky means. The internet is owned by no-one. Anyone and everyone is able to use the internet to their advantage.
When Shirky says; “the internet imposes no barriers to entry”, he quite literally means that anyone can use it, and everyone can profit from it. And he isn’t talking about paying for NBN or just the ‘World Wide Web’.
He’s talking careers in; YouTubing, web-blogging, and so many other things.
The internet expands far beyond what we know.
Now what about the Long Tail effect?!
Take Amazon for example… Amazon sells lots of things but for the sake of this example let’s talk about books. Amazon sells many books. If someone was to be trying to find a particular book that they can’t find in a regular book store in their hometown, they might go to Amazon. This is why they are so successful.
They take an ordinary item, and sell the unique with the mainstream, and make them accessible to everyone.
Lots of online stores are doing this now. And this is called the Long Tail effect.

Hiya!
I really enjoyed your blogpost, espicially when you highlighted the Long Tail Effect with an actual example of it in action, as I have been struggling to understand it.
You also talked about being an “Internet Sensation” which was the major focus of my blog, in which I talked about popular YouTubers and the idea of generational youtubers, so if you are interested you are more than welcome to check it out!
